Believe. Dream. Inspire | A Personal Project by Kaleb Jacobowitz

My 5th grader is required to participate in the National PTA Reflections program this year.  In doing so the students are required to artistically capture or demonstrate this year’s theme: Believe, Dream, Inspire through photography, dance choreography, film production, etc.  Johnathan, a kid after his momma’s heart, chose to submit an entry in the photography category.  He asked if I would post this on my blog and, of course, I am delighted to do so.

As soon as we learned of the required entry into the program we started brainstorming.  I encouraged him to really think about what those three words meant to him and then try to imagine some things that he could photograph that matched the list he had brainstormed.  He came up with several good ideas and we had every intention of putting a couple of them into action and seeing which one he liked the best to submit.  Then came the rain…. for seven straight days.  I knew we were going to be pushing the time factor to the limit to get the shot he wanted, get it edited (if needed or desired), and order it from the lab.  I even spent some time with him teaching him how to shoot in manual.  He had really wanted to try doing some double exposure shots so we discussed that as well.

Somethings never go as planned.  Sometimes they are even better.  The picture below is not anything that either one of us dreamed up.  It was simply the right time, the right place, the right moment!  Behold…. Johnathan’s entry for Believe. Dream. Inspire. …

I’m so proud of him!  He shot this in manual on my Nikon D600 and edited it by himself.  Yes, I taught him how to work PSE but he did this… and I love it!
